Laser Engraving Project

Artistic Applications of Digital Laser Cutting Technologies

PID2022-139931NB-I00

About the Project

This is the website of the National R&D&i Plan research project ARTISTIC APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL LASER CUTTING TECHNOLOGIES TO THE PRODUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY GRAPHIC WORK (PID2022-139931NB-I00), active between 2024 and the end of 2027.

Aims

Based on experimentation with various materials, software, and characteristics of images and vector designs, and their transfer to printing plates through the use of a digital laser cutting machine, the aim is to find new ways of thinking and producing relief and intaglio printing plates, simplifying photogravure methods and opening new possibilities for graphic expression.

Background

Different ways of using digital technologies are already integrated into the production of graphic work, generally in the form of digital prints. However, digital laser cutting technologies and the possibilities they offer for conceiving and producing printing plates are only at the beginning of their scientific evaluation.

Therefore, it is necessary to finding out new elements that help formulate their processes, concepts, and associated specific language. In short, to complete the scientific discourse based on the experimentation and analysis of the techniques and creative processes that can be derived from this device applied to artistic production, initially conceived for industrial and commercial use purposes.
